A monographic review of the Thermosbaenacea (Crustacea: Peracarida) A study on their morphology, taxonomy, phylogeny and biogeography Naturalis
Wagner, H.P..
In addition to a taxonomic review of the whole order Thermosbaenacea, the general morphology and chaetotaxy are discussed in detail. Due to the results of cuticular staining, and through the study of specimens with SEM techniques also, corrections to earlier interpretations could be made. A chaetotaxic classification, modified after the one of Watling (1989), is presented. In the taxonomic part 34 species are recognized, belonging to seven genera (one new), four families (one new). The examination of adult material of the type species of Monodella, i.e., Monodella stygicola Ruffo, 1949, warranted the creation of Tethysbaena gen. nov., to comprise all other taxa previously included in Monodella. Transferred to Tethysbaena are: M. argentarii Stella, 1951; M....

A new species of Seira (Collembola: Entomobryidae) from the state of Paraíba, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Godeiro,Nerivânia Nunes; Bellini,Bruno Cavalcante.
A new species of Seira Lubbock, 1869 is described and illustrated. Seiraglabra sp. nov. is the second species described from the municipality of Areia (Caatinga biome) and the seventh from the state of Paraíba, Brazil. Compared with other species of the genus, Seira glabra sp. nov. has some remarkable reductions on dorsal chaetotaxy, specially on the methatorax and first abdominal segment. The most similar species to S.glabra sp. nov. is Seira praiana. Both lack macrochaetae on the first abdominal segment.

A standardized description of European Sminthuridae (Collembola, Symphypleona), 1: genera Lipothrix, Gisinurus, and Caprainea Naturalis
Nayrolles, Pierre.
A new standard description of Collembola Symphypleona is proposed. In particular, a standard table of the appendicular chaetotaxy (antennae, legs, and furcula) is given. According to this presentation, the following species are redescribed: Lipothrix lubbocki (Tullberg, 1872), Gisinurus malatestai Dallai, 1970, Caprainea marginata (Schött, 1893), and Caprainea bremondi (Delamare & Bassot, 1957).

A standardized description of European Sminthuridae (Collembola, Symphypleona), 2: review of four species of the genera Allacma and Spatulosminthurus Naturalis
Nayrolles, Pierre.
According to our standard of the appendicular chaetotaxy, the following species are redescribed: Allacma fusca (Linné, 1758), Allacma gallica (Carl, 1899), Spatulosminthurus lesnei (Carl, 1899), and Spatulosminthurus betschi Nayrolles, 1990.

A standardized description of European Sminthuridae (Collembola, Symphypleona), 3: description of seven species of Sminthurus, including four new to science Naturalis
Nayrolles, Pierre.
The following three species are redescribed: Sminthurus viridis (Linnaeus, 1758), Sminthurus nigromaculatus Tullberg, 1871, and Sminthurus multipunctatus Schäffer, 1896. Four new species are described from France and Spain: Sminthurus bourgeoisi n. sp., Sminthurus bozoulensis n. sp., Sminthurus leucomelanus n.sp.,and Sminthurus hispanicus n. sp. The importance of the ontogeny of chaetotaxy is stressed. Indeed, not all species acquire the secondary chaetotaxy in the same instar, and for these characters the most informative instar is not the adult but the third juvenile instar. The study of such characters involves the clustering of similar characters. A short discussion is given about this issue (selection of characters and clustering criteria).

Analysis of a species/instars/characters table: a theoretical survey on the use of chaetotaxy in ontophylogenetic studies Naturalis
Nayrolles, Pierre.
Phylogenetic studies on several groups of arthropods, such as Acari (mites) or Collembola (springtails), make wide use of chaetotaxy. Chaetotaxic characters, besides being morphological features (setal shape), often have a binary nature, that is presence vs. absence. A seta can be variable in a population, and one may attribute a presence probability to this seta. In fact, the presence probability should be defined for each instar. One might think that a variable seta corresponds to a polymorphism (e.g., two or more alleles in a population); in fact, setal variability should be regarded as the result of a propensity intrinsic to individuals, i.e., a potentiality being expressed at random among specimens. The phenomenon known as lateral inhibition explains...

External morphology of immature stages of Zaretis strigosus (Gmelin) and Siderone galanthis catarina Dottax and Pierre comb. nov., with taxonomic notes on Siderone (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Charaxinae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Dias,Fernando Maia Silva; Oliveira-Neto,José Francisco de; Casagrande,Mirna Martins; Mielke,Olaf Hermann Hendrik.
ABSTRACT The external morphology of immature stages of Zaretis strigosus (Gmelin, [1790]) and Siderone galanthis catarina Dottax and Pierre, 2009 comb. nov. from southern Brazil are described. Additionally, morphology of the adults and sequences of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase, subunit I, were analyzed in order to evaluate the taxonomy of Siderone galanthis Hübner, [1823]. Immatures were collected on Casearia sylvestris (Salicaceae) in Curitiba, Paraná, and Balneário Barra do Sul, Santa Catarina, Brazil, and reared at the laboratory. Morphological descriptions and illustrations are provided, based on observations through stereoscopic and optic microscopes attached to camera lucida; results are compared and discussed and immature stages of some...

Trogolaphysa formosensis sp. nov. (Collembola: Paronellidae) from Atlantic Forest, Northeast Region of Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Silva,Diego Dias da; Bellini,Bruno Cavalcante.
Trogolaphysa formosensis sp. nov. (holotype male deposited in DBEZ from Brazil, state of Rio Grande do Norte State, municipality of Bani Formosa), a new springtail from the Atlantic Forest domain, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, is described and illustrated. This species is diagnosed by unique coloration pattern, presence of 8+8 eyes, reduced number of setae on metatrochanteral organ, unguiculi truncated and dorsal chaetotaxy. Trogolaphysa formosensis sp. nov. is the first species of the genus from Brazil with all eye lenses. All other Brazilian species present 0+0 or 2+2 eyes. It is also the first species of Trogolaphysa described from the Northeast Region of Brazil.

Two new species of Salina MacGillivray (Collembola, Paronellidae) with rectangular mucro from South America Rev. Bras. entomol.
Oliveira,Fábio Gonçalves de Lima; Cipola,Nikolas Gioia.
ABSTRACT Two new species of Salina, S. maculiflora sp. nov. from Brazil and S. colombiana sp. nov. from Colombia are described and illustrated. The complete dorsal chaetotaxy, including the specialized chaetae (S-chaeta), is studied in these new species. Comparisons based on the chaetotaxy of the basomedian field, abdomen II, and mucro shape are made between species from groups beta, celebensis, and borneensis. This is the first record of Salina with rectangular mucro (beta group) in South America and a key to the seven Nearctic and Neotropical species is provided.
